Santa Clara County Preschool Cited for Excessive Punishments

JULY 1, 2009 – An investigation by the state Department of Social Services cited a Watsonville preschool for inappropriate disciplinary techniques. Teachers at Noah’s Ark Preschool were accused of yanking students ears and noses and administering unnecessarily long time outs, according to the investigation that was made public this week. The center is now required to hire an outside consultant to train staff in positive discipline techniques. A woman who oversees the preschool said three employees have been fired as a result of the findings. Noah’s Ark, located on Trinity Lutheran Church property, serves more than 100 children. Investigators made a surprise inspection June 22 after receiving complaints. They were able to substantiate the allegations during interviews with staff and students. They also noticed a child had been left outside unattended after the rest of the students had come inside.
