JULY 28, 2009 – A 48-year-old man became the fourth fatality in the 10-year history of the Altamont Commuter Express train, authorities said. Jeffrey Donald Walters of Stockton was killed when his white Nissan pickup truck was struck by a train en route to Manteca, according to the San Joaquin County Coroner’s office. The accident occurred about 4:35 a.m. on Roth Road in Lathrop. The train had departed Stockton about 4:20 a.m. and was traveling southbound at an estimated 72 mph when the collision occurred, according to an ACE spokesman. Investigators are trying to determine why the truck was on the tracks. The guard arms appeared to be working, investigators said. A similar non-fatal collision occurred earlier this summer on Roth Road, authorities said. Nobody aboard the train was injured in the latest ACE train accident. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department is among those investigating the collision.
