AUGUST 15, 2009 – A 19-year-old man was hospitalized with major injuries after a sports-utility vehicle apparently ran a red light and struck his vehicle, authorities said. Jared Journet of Visalia was driving a 1995 Toyota Avalon south on Burke Street just after 9 p.m. when his vehicle collided with a 2004 Chevy Avalanche that was traveling west on Mineral King Avenue, according to Visalia police. Witnesses told police that the driver of the Avalanche, identified as 23-year-old Jonmichael Miyakama of Tulare, failed to stop at a red light. Journet was transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment of his head injuries, authorities said. Miyakama sustained a knee injury, and a female passenger in his car complained of abdominal pain, police said. The occupants were wearing seat belts, investigators said. No citations were immediately issued or arrests made, but the Visalia Police Department is continuing to investigate the collision.
