SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 – Toyota has announced a recall of floor mats on eight different Toyota and Lexus model cars, totaling 3.8 million vehicles and spanning six years of production. The mats are being recalled because they may not remain securely in place, and could cause the accelerator pedal to become stuck. The recall includes the most recent Toyota Camry and Toyota Prius models.
Owners of the following Toyota and Lexus models are advised to remove their driver side floor mats immediately and not replace them until Toyota has installed a replacement mat that can be secured in place.

-
2004 – 2009 Toyota Prius
-
2005 – 2010 Toyota Tacoma
-
2007 – 2010 Toyota Tundra
-
2007 – 2010 Lexus ES350
-

The recall was announced in the wake of a high-speed crash that killed four people, including a CHP officer, in Santee, CA on August 28, 2009, involving a 2009 Lexus. The Lexus involved was a loaner vehicle from Bob Baker Lexus of El Cajon, in San Diego County. The fatal crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was a factor in the recall. Some of the vehicles involved have a keyless ignition, which makes shutting down an out-of-control vehicle difficult, the NHTSA reported.
