I-15 Route and Designations

I-15 has numerous designations throughout California, including the Escondido Freeway, the Semper Fi Highway (near the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station), the Temecula Valley Freeway, the Corona Freeway, the Ontario Freeway, and the Mojave Freeway.

Interstate 15 Accidents and Speeding

Dozens of people die each year on I-15 in California. A 2005 report on Dateline NBC identified the stretch of I-15 from southern California to Las Vegas as one of the most dangerous roadways in the country. Speeding contributed to 173 I-15 fatalities over a five-year period, according to the report. Accidents are common during rush hours, especially on Friday afternoon and evening, when drivers are in a rush to get from California out to Las Vegas for the weekend.

Cajon Pass Truck Accidents

In San Bernardino County, the Cajon Pass is a stretch of I-15 that is known for high wind and fog. I-15, designated as the Mojave Freeway through the Cajon Pass, passes through the highest point on I-15 at the Cajon Summit.  The area occasionally is temporarily closed due to snow. Trucks sometimes overturn on the Cajon pass when winds reach gale-force strength. On the morning of June 10, 2009, a pileup involving approximately 50 vehicles occurred on Interstate 15, near Oak Hills in the Cajon Pass.
