About Interstate 8
Interstate 8 is a 348-mile long freeway that runs from San Diego, CA to the I-10 Junction, just east of Casa Grande, Arizona. In portions of Imperial County, I-8 is just two miles north of the United States-Mexico border. Its official name from its western terminus in San Diego to the Arizona state line is the Border Friendship Route. West of its junction with I-5 in San Diego, I 8 is called the “Ocean Beach Highway.” Throughout San Diego County, I8 is also signed as the Kumeyaay Highway, after the local Native American tribe. Interstate 8 was previously U.S. Route 80 from 1929 until 1964, when it was signed as Interstate 8.

In San Diego, I-8 intersects Interstate 5, Interstate 805, Interstate 15, State Route 125, State Route 67, State Route 79 and State Route 94. In Imperial County, I-8 intersects State Route 98, State Route 86, State Route 111, State Route 7, State Route 115, State Route 98, and State Route 186.
